First case of the Coronavirus whereby the source of infection is unknown
by Nathan'ette Burdine: February 27, 2020

Yesterday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that the United States has its first of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) whereby the source of infection is unknown. And whenever the source of an infection is unknown, it is defined as community spread. The CDC reported, “It’s possible this could be an instance of community spread of COVID-19, which would be the first time in the United States.”

The patient, who has not been identified, was tested for the Coronavirus while at UC Davis Health in California. According to press release from UC Davis Health, the patient arrived to its facility from another hospital in the state.

UC Davis Health did not test the patient, initially, for the Coronavirus because the patient was not showing signs of the common symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, and or shortness of breath that the CDC has listed as possible evidence that an individual may be infected with the virus. Also, the patient did not travel outside the United States and there was no indication that the patient had come in contact with an infected individual.

It hasn’t been said, exactly, what lead to the CDC requesting that the patient be tested. But one possibility are the number of cases, which were over 30 during that time, associated with people who were infected and the fact that California is one of the six states where many of the infected individuals are located. The officials at the CDC could have looked at those two facts and decided to expand the agency’s testing criteria for the Coronavirus.
